Topic #9 - PC Gaming vs Console Gaming Empty
PostSubject: Topic #9 - PC Gaming vs Console Gaming   Topic #9 - PC Gaming vs Console Gaming EmptyWed Jan 19, 2011 1:15 pm

Now, I'll start this by saying, these two things are fairly different when you go into detail. Aside from current generation consoles having all these added features that make them closer and closer to computers, they still seem extremely one dimensional. Before any of the settings, music, videos, DLC, or anything of the sort was available, you had a machine that played the games you bought. No internet, no updates and patches, just a game and your console. You can say it helps that we now have internet and easier ways to play with others without having a friend over and playing split screen, but at that same token, and as a perfect example now with PS3, this also allows people to mess around with the system and allow hacking, and other types of modifications that weren't meant to be there in the first place.

On the PC, this is something that has been a problem since gaming developed on it. Granted, they don't get severely out of hand, but it can get some people who just want to enjoy the game they bought, to now want to leave it or just stop playing those games, or games in general.

Back to my point, these days, PC Gaming and Console Gaming have been getting closer and closer to being similar. Each had their own pros and cons, to a point. These days those same pros and cons begin getting slimmer and slimmer until they seem to be one in the same. Using a mouse allows fluent aiming and better control with FPSs and such. People on consoles may not be as quick to learn how to use the joysticks on the console as quickly than just pointing with the mouse. With that said, some people do pretty bad trying to use a keyboard, such as myself, and tend to do worse with movement or just using certain things that on a console, is a simple button on a controller which leaves PC controls and console controls to have their balance.

Into more detail, PCs always allowed extra enjoyment with mods and textures and things of that sort that allow you to change the game a bit and give you much more variety and enjoyment out of the game. Of course, people get crazy and decide to hack a game and cheat, but for mot games, especially ones you play alone or with close friends, you add things to the game that you guys find particularly funny and amusing. Like a flying dolphin with dragon wings. Whatever the case may be, having the ability to edit things in a game and be able to access certain controls, gives PC gaming an advantage over consoles.

Up until a few days ago, PS3 had an advantage, with (almost) flawless control over hackers. Some find it fun, others, not as much. I feel like consoles should have that security for the people who want to enjoy the game the way it was meant to be played. No one should have control over the people, but altering something isn't too cool especially when it begins to affect other people who played the game, and liked the way it was. Nonetheless, my point is, PC had this flaw for a long time, and now it seems to affect anything that has games. To be honest, I know something will be done to fix this, whether it's an update or getting rid of certain things that allowed people to hack in the first place.

Now, on the bright side, consoles, at least PlayStation and Nintendo, have their own exclusives which does not get shared with the PC. There are certain games the PC has over consoles, but for the most part, it's not as big of a library as it once was. Now they either just get a multi-platform game, a Microsoft game, or something solely developed for PC, which seems to be limited more and more.

One other thing is that, unless you completely devote your money and time into your PC, most games will either 1) Look glitched 2) Run slowly 3) Miss out on good graphics. Some people don't mind, but as long as you have an HDTV and a console capable of HD, you're good to go. PC Gaming is more of a perk rather than the main thing of focus on the system.

All in all, it's a huge matter of opinion and I shouldn't have too much right giving my opinion, given I rarely play as much PC as I once did, nor do I have a gaming PC anymore. It has its highs and lows and with Portal 2 on the PS3 allowing players to play with others on the PC shows that, sometime soon, they will all be one in the same. It's all a process being developed, and who knows, maybe one day, PC gaming and console gaming will no longer be something to compare, maybe they will be one in the same.
